My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Loved the book. Loved the suspense, the characters, the creepiness, all of it. And I'm thrilled because this is the first Lisa Gardner book I've read. And I see that this is #8 for Detective D.D. Warren and I am excited to read the first seven!
Flora was a good girl; raised on a farm, loved her mom, played in nature, smart, good to school, etc. And one wrong move led to her confinement in a coffin for four hundred and seventy two days (I find it interesting that that number, when thought about by Flora, is always spelled out...who spells out 472?) It makes a point of the severity and length of her imprisonment.
Present day, she's been "free" for about five years. Yet, this is one tortured girl. She's now after the captors of other girls just like she had been. Why does she do this? Why can't she just get on with her life? Well, that takes us down a path that is particularly convoluted and my least favorite part of the book. Only because I don't know if it was necessary to heap on all this "extra" because Flora is already a complex creature. I think it almost felt like an excuse to her behavior when she clearly did not need excuses. It would be great to have a spin-off series of Flora books!
I can't give much more detail because of spoilers. But I think other reviewers may have overreacted when talking about too many violent details of her capture. I believe that these details are important to her character.
Looking forward to the others!
