Another great psychological thriller from K.L. SlaterK.L. Slater!
I have tried to write a review without spoilers and I cannot. So let me say, totally worth reading if you like thrillers and psychological suspense. Slater is able to bring you in to the mind of the affected person in such a way that I can only describe as deliciously creepy!
This would have been even more than 4.0 stars for me if there was not SO much going on. As with the last book I read of Slater's, Safe With Me, her plot is already so twisty and the characters so strong that she really doesn't need all the extra.
Okay, I've got to put in spoilers...great thriller and I look forward to many more! Wonderful writing!

After years of trying to get published and never getting further than the slush pile, I went back to university at the age of 40 where I studied for an English & Creative Writing degree followed by an MA in Creative Writing.
Although I also worked full-time during the five years I studied at university, the courses gave me the time and space to try different writing and increased my confidence and belief in my writing. Before I graduated from my MA, I had secured representation with my agent, Clare Wallace, at the Darley Anderson Literacy, TV and Film Agency and had my first book deal.
My first adult psychological thriller for Bookouture is called ‘Safe with Me’ and it actually started life as my dissertation on my English & Creative Writing degree.
The creepy voice of Anna came to me strong and insistent . . . she wanted to be written, she wouldn’t go away.
I live in Nottingham with my husband, Mac. Between us we have three grown-up kids; my daughter, Francesca and Mac’s sons Nathan and Jake.
I also write multi-award winning YA fiction under the name Kim Slater.

Awesome plot here - I mean there is so much coming together and all very strong.
My favorite part of Slater's writing is that she is able to successfully write in the first person from the view of an insane person. Nothing could be more creepy than revealing the thought pattern of a psychopath as if it is totally normal.
I had zero idea who was crazier during about 95% of this book - Judi or Amber. As I began to lose sympathy for Judi, I wasn't sure if I could get behind Amber. In fact, up until the LAST FEW PAGES - and brilliantly written in as the first chapter as well! Wow! - I wasn't sure who it was that had had the "last word".
This writing is so unique and gripping, I wish Slater did not feel as though there had to be all these other subplots as well. They only got in the way. But now that I wrote that, I kind of get it. Even though it did feel convoluted, there was a purpose for the side stories....
Fiona served the purpose of showing Judi's husband had a dark part to him. I believe though that the book would have been just as strong without that. However, Fiona's children allowed us to see inside the mind even further of Judi...how she wanted to possess and "care for" another child. But some of the detail in it just felt like "extra".
I did get frustrated that no one cared that Amber lied in such a big way about her job. Well, until it became apparent what Amber was there for.
Could her sister's diary have really given away all that Amber needed to conclude that Judi was responsible for the death? I'm not so sure. I mean, whatever she wrote, she would have written it before she had died. If she believed Judi was dangerous to this level, would she have risked her LIFE to spend time with David?
Not enough was elaborated upon on why Amber was such a poor daughter as opposed to Kathyrn. Why did her mom hate her so much and why was she then putting so much effort in to her mother? Was Amber THAT GOOD of a person? Not sure.
Or what about Henry's additional bank card? I mean would Judi really go and withdraw that much money for Fiona? She wouldn't get the attention for money spent on Hank. That was odd. Although Fiona had it exactly right when she said that her child could not be bought.
I think Slater has only one or two other books? I will read anything she writes because I love the way she brings the reader in to the mind of the insane person. I cannot imagine what she does to educate herself to get in the head of afflicted persons, but the results are amazing! This was from the mind of a woman with Munchausen by Proxy who wouldn't have even understood how sick she was. It's the every day ramblings in her head that gives me the chills!
