The Girl from Old Nichol by Betty Annand 3 of 5 stars Having just read another title in the same time period, Victoria, by Daisy Goodwin, I feel shorted by this one. The characters lacked depth. The situations did not seem realistic. I could not muster up sympathy for Gladys even though she was being raised in a slum by alcoholic parents. I just kept thinking 'Really?' and that was distracting. So, no, I did not root for Gladys as the back cover encourages me too. Instead, I breathed a sigh of relief when the book started coming to an end. The descriptions of the surrounding were quite detailed and I enjoyed that part. I just wish the author put that much more effort into transporting me there through the characters. I would read this author again, however, because there is a lot of promise. Maybe not a period piece. |
