I usually love Sue Miller. The Arsonist left me feeling satisfied; I felt I knew the characters. The Lake Shore Limited, honestly, not so much. I finished the book and just went, Huh? I don't know the point, I don't have strong opinions about any of them. Perhaps it's that she looked to each character to narrate at some point. But usually this is a good idea. It just didn't do it for me, but I'll still be reading the next Sue Miller that comes my way. Perhaps the writing style just wasn't a good match for me.
